The mechanism of direct consultation between the authorities and the people on the most important issues of social development began to work from the first years of the existence of sovereign Belarus. This practice became crucial when discussing amendments and additions to the Basic Law, submitted to a republican referendum on February 27, 2022, appointed at the initiative of the President. The proposed changes concerned primarily the issues of the state structure of our country, the development of the principles of democracy, the constitutional consolidation of marriage and family relations, the preservation of historical memory and others. On March 3, 2022, the Central Election Commission of Belarus announced the results of the plebiscite. It was recognized as having taken place, and its decision to amend and supplement the Constitution was accepted. The next day, the Head of State signed the Decision of the Republican Referendum on February 27, 2022.

In total, as a result of the referendum decision, the preamble and 85 articles of the Constitution were adjusted, 11 new articles appeared, and 2 articles were excluded. Also, the Basic Law was supplemented with a new chapter (Chapter 31 “All-Belarusian People's Assembly”).
Currently, the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus contains 9 sections, 9 chapters and 156 articles.
